On This Day in Music History: The Journey For Jimi Hendrix Begins

On this day in music history in 1966, Linda Keith (Keith Richard’s girlfriend) and Chas Chandler from The Animals decide to check out Jimi Hendrix in New York. The rest is history.

Linda Keith had already seen Jimi Hendrix play a few times prior to this date. But, she felt that Jimi needed more exposure and would flourish in London with his sound. On the recommendation from Keith, Chas Chandler from The Animals decided to join her on this particular night at The Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village, New York City.

Of course, Keith had numerous ties to the music scene in London, due to the fact she was Keith Richard‘s girlfriend who was in The Rolling Stones at the time. In numerous interviews, Keith made it quite known how blown away, she was the second she saw Hendrix perform. Chandler had the same feeling when he saw Hendrix on this day in 1966.

Chandler, then began his attempts to lure Hendrix to London where his music would receive the proper appreciation, which Jimi obviously agreed to. Soon after, Chandler then teamed Hendrix up with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell to create The Jimi Hendrix Experience. They began recording their debut album Are You Experienced in October of 1966. Their album was finished by April 1967 and officially released on May 12, 1967.
